EMDR

Introduction to EMDR

EMDR stands for a model of psychotherapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This innovative and powerful psychotherapy model was discovered through chance observation by Dr Francine Shapiro in 1987 and studied scientifically until 1989 when she reported her successful findings in the Journal of Traumatic Stress. In the beginning this therapy was primarily used to address the impact of trauma, particularly Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Today it is successfully being used to treat many other problems such as:

  • Abuse , Anxiety , Trauma, Depression , Phobias
  • Grief, Panic attacks, Performance Anxiety, Disturbing Memories
  • Addictions, Conflict, Anxiety disorders

Rigorously controlled studies of EMDR have been published that substantiate its efficacy. Numerous international organizations and government bodies have endorsed it including:

  • The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies
  • The US Department of Defense
  • The American Psychological Association
  • The American Psychiatric Association

Many clients who have made slow progress or not benefited from more traditional therapies, say that with EMDR they have finally found something that works for them.

It has been estimated that EMDR has been used to successfully treat over half a million people of all ages to relieve psychological distress.
